OK, here is my first foray into political campaign advertising. Any Cain supporters can feel free to use this poster in any way, email, Facebook posting etc, as long as there is no financial profit involved. In case this poster ever needs to be printed I retain the vector graphic file. Anyone interested in doing that should contact me at gerritcampbell@yahoo.com, and a higher resolution version can be easily produced. I look forward to any feedback or ideas for other banners etc that anyone would be willing to contribute.

Update – I have added a .pdf to a printable bumper sticker version of this graphic, 11x3inches, with larger more readable text for annoying those liberals in the car behind you! 999_reasons_bumpersticker

IF-Sneaky

IllustrationFriday is Sneaky this week. Here’s a Halloween themed comic strip I made for my Adobe Illustrator class out of painstakingly handcrafted vectors. The original title was Evil Pumpkins, but Sneaky Pumpkins works just as well and captures the theme just as nicely. The idea was that pumpkins are not very large, so the evil they do must be small and localized. On a side note, I must be internalizing my role as a graphic designer because I find myself annoyed that the text formatting options in this wordpress window are so limited. I mean, what, no dropcaps?

IF-Caged (Hearts and Bones)

Illustrationfriday is Caged this week. I immediately thought about rib cages, and this is directly owing to a book I was just given: Gunther Von Hagens’ Bodyworlds. You know, the anatomist guy who plasticizes whole donated bodies. I also thought of the song Hearts and Bones, by Paul Simon. Pulled some inspiration from Anatomy For the Artist as well, which I used for skeleton reference and the antiquated diagram style. I made separate drawings of the ribcage in black sharpie and graphite, and a heart which I colorized in Photoshop. The background is watercolor paper, scanned and darkened, and the whole thing layered together. Please click the image to view a larger version!

IF-Trail

IllustrationFriday is Trail this week. Last week was Slither, but I didn’t get myself in gear soon enough and so I missed it. Therefore I have included this snail, which is sort of slithery. I just got some stuff: new machine to run CS5, new Epson scanner, new desk to put it all on(IKEA ftw). So now with my graphic design area setup I felt it was high time to start participating again; this was really my first attempt at painting in CS5 and it was pretty enjoyable. The drawings were done on paper and scanned. I lavished some effort on the shell but I tried not to overdo it, since I wanted the snail to remain somewhat cartoonish.

IF-Expired

IllustrationFriday’s theme this week is “Expired.” I had a difficult time coming up with something representational of the word, at least something that sparked my interest, until I remembered that winter had just expired. From there it was easy. I wanted to do something Japanese looking, so I used india ink and bamboo horsehair brushes, and some watercolor. It also gave me a convenient excuse to use my hand carved soapstone Chop!

IF-Subterranean

Illustrationfriday this week is Subterranean! Since I haven’t drawn anything truly macabre in some time, I figured this was the ideal opportunity. Please click the image to view the larger size! I wanted an antiqued look, so I used black tea to stain white drawing paper, and then I baked it in the oven for a nice crinkly brittle effect(credit: this was my sister’s idea). The handwriting was done with india ink and a caligraphy pen, and the blood is watercolor casually flung onto the paper and left to dry.

IllustrationFriday is Brave this week. Since I’m on spring break and that means I have no easy professional scanner access, I think it’s time for another Alice drawing. Here she is, bravely facing down some utterly terrifying (and yet lovable?) flowers. It was drawn on watercolor board in black ink, and then I used liquid watercolor, regular watercolor, and color pencil to finish it.

IllustrationFriday is Perspective this week! I chose definition number three according to dictionary.com; a visible scene, esp. one extending to a distance; vista. Because, well, because I was already making this and it seemed to fit well. I took a class in art history recently and I was inspired by the Daoist landscapes we studied. Ink and color pencil on white paper.

Here is my contribution for “Propagate” this week on IllustrationFriday. After I drew this two days ago I was astounded to see some very similar pieces of artwork popping up! I guess dandelions are just the epitome of propagation in the seed world.
